For those of you who haven't been in my basement, we live on painted concrete floors. We have a couple rugs, but the floor is still rock hard. We try to lay down blanket on top of blanket to make it soft so we can put Riley down, but then his little fingers get so cold so fast because it's FREEZING down here. So my worry is that he will be under developed for his age because he doesn't have a chance to practice rolling around on the floor. But we don't know how long we will live here, and what if he is a year old trying to crawl and walk all over? It's not safe if he falls head first onto cement. We are trying to save money to buy cheap carpet remnants, but that is a slow process. And with this whole teething situation I think we are starting to get ourselves into, he wants to chew on EVERYTHING, but his little hands don't hold anything yet. Except for our fingers and barely his binky, but what else can I give him to hold to gnaw on?
And what age do they roll over? From front to back, and then back to front? If we prop him up on his belly over his elbows he will push his arms and roll on his side, but because of the colic, he HATES being on his belly. And after one roll, he gets all over stimulated and cries, so 1 roll is more then enough for him. If he is flat on his belly, he is a wet noodle, he just wiggles. And when he is on his back, he kicks and kicks his legs, and recently he has been using his legs to grab the toys hanging off his jungle gym. It's hilarious. His little toes and feet wrapped around a monkey. And he concentrates so hard on that, the thought of rolling over is not even real to him yet. One thing he does do is stand. I swear, because of this carpet situation, he will walk before he crawls. His legs are SO strong. He stands up on my lap all the time. He can almost sit up on the floor not leaning on anything. But only for a second, and it looks like he is bowing his nose to the floor before he falls over to one side. lol

And when can you start carrying babies (boys) wrapped around your hip? Like one leg on each side? I'm worried about his little man parts being squished. And he doesn't really have the upper body strength to hold himself to my body yet.
Am I crazy? Or do I really have something to worry about? Does anyone know what a regular cycle of baby development is? Or where I can buy a book? Or little baby exercises I can do to make the right muscles he needs become stronger? I worry because he doesn't even hold toys yet! Are we behind? Am I causing my child to be a slow starter because we don't have carpet?

whatever you do DON'T COMPARE him to anyones kid...every child is so different and go at their own pace...our nephew never crawled he skipped it and just started to walk...enjoy how little and immoblie (word?) he is...pretty soon he will be getting into everything and you will wish he still just laid on his back!!!
Ok chill mama!!! Head upstairs and chill on the main floor with the baby! Riley will be fine... ok if you don't want to head upstairs then lay him on your bed! Mason didn't roll over until 4 months... he's what we like to call an underachiever! Put an add on craigs list and see if anyone has carpet for cheap (not used, just extra)
Cute pictures! He's adorable! He is happy, he loves you, and you are a good mom. Obviously he has a great dad too! Cutest picture of them under the exercise gym. Don't stress. Just enjoy it!
Every kid is so different and actually the normal range for development is SO wide open, especially at this age. But just because, I looked up some of your questions in my book. I will try to figure out how to get the book to mom before she leaves Wednesday morning.
In the mean time, these facts should make you feel tons better:
By the end of the 3rd month baby...
... should be able to
1. lift head up 45 degrees while lying on stomach
2. follow an object in an arc about 6 inches above the face past the midline (straight ahead)
...will probably be able to:
laugh out loud
lift head up 90 degrees while on stomach
squeal in delight
bring both hands together
smile spontaneously
follow an object in an arc about 6 inches above the face from one side to the other (180 degrees)
By the END of the 4th month...
...should be able to
lift head 90 degrees while on stomach
laugh out loud
follow an object in front of their face from side to side
will probably be able to
hold head steady when upright
raise chest, supported by arms while on stomach
roll over one way
grasp a rattle
etc, etc.
By the end of the 5th month a few babies will be able to manage unassisted sitting when propped up by their hands, but most will still tumble forward in this position.
By the end of the 5th month, babies should be able to roll over one way, bear some weight on their legs, etc.
So it sounds to me like Riley is doing great, even ahead in some areas. Remember that other moms like to celebrate every little thing their kids do that might show them off as "advanced." Even if it's a totally flukey thing and they don't do it again for a month or two. Usually you never hear that! Just..."oh, she did that when she was blank months old!" Try to not take all the comparisons too seriously and enjoy Riley while he's a baby cuz it goes by way too fast. Besides, it's not like he's in competition for college admission right now! And I promise he will be potty trained, walking, and talking all before Kindergarten!
love you!
Dude! He's doing just fine! :) Get "What to Expect the First Year" or check out iVillage.com if you want to check up on how he's doing w/his milestones.
